Questions left surrounding deadly Jefferson City shooting
No one is facing charges after a man was shot and killed in Jefferson City.
ABC 17 News reported a 25-year-old man was shot around 10:30 p.m. Sunday in the Hawthorn Park Apartments area.
The man police arrested on scene was released Monday and is no longer a suspect since he may have acted in self-defense, according to police.
But many questions still surround the shooting like what started and and where exactly it happened.
Some residents in the apartment complex told ABC 17 News they heard the commotion.
“Like six gunshots and then like two other ones from somebody,” one resident, who did not want to be identified, said.
The Firley YMCA off Ellis Boulevard backs right up to the Hawthorn Park Apartments.
ABC 17 News crews on scene Sunday night saw a heavy police presence right behind the YMCA near the pool area.
ABC 17 News looked Monday and saw at least two bullet holes in the YMCA building in the same spot.
Neither police nor the YMCA responded to messages to confirm if the bullet holes were from the same shooting.
ABC 17 News is also working to find out if anyone was inside the building at the time.
Multiple residents told ABC 17 News that was not the first time they have felt unsafe living in the apartments. But others said it helped to know two officers live in the complex.
“We have one that lives right across from where I live at and around the corner and I feel safe with them being around,” another resident, who also wished not to be identified, said.
Jefferson City police have not released the name of the shooter nor the man killed.
Police said they do not believe anyone else was at large in the shooting or a danger to the public.
