Deadly shooting in Jefferson City may have been self-defense
UPDATE: Police have released the man they had been holding in connection with Sunday’s deadly shooting in Jefferson City.
Captain Doug Shoemaker told ABC 17 News his detectives haven’t found any evidence of malicious intent, and that this may have been a case of self-defense. The man detained Sunday night is now being called a “person of interest” instead of “suspect.”
ORIGINAL: Jefferson City Police confirm one person was shot and killed in the 500 block of Ellis Boulevard Sunday night.
Police were called to the scene around 10:30 p.m. for reports of shots fired.
Capt. Doug Shoemaker said one person is in custody in connection to the shooting. He said preliminary investigation reveals the victim and the suspect knew each other. Shoemaker said it doesn’t appear any other suspects were involved in the shooting, but said they’re not ruling out the possibility of more suspects at this time.
Officers blocked off access to the Hawthorne Parks apartment complex behind the YMCA while they investigated.
Shoemaker said officers also found two firearms on scene.
