Man shot in Camden County dies, suspected shooter in jail

A Camden County man shot during a fight on August 10 has died, according to the sheriff’s office.

Joseph Beeman, 33, had been in critical condition at University Hospital in Columbia following the shooting last week. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Deputies say Beeman and Dustin Burkhart, the suspected shooter, got into an argument at a home on Old South State Highway 5 in the Decaturville area early in the morning of August 10. Burkhart apparently told investigators Beeman showed up at the home with a gun and demanded a woman there leave with him.

According to deputies, the woman refused, and Bukhart got his own gun. Burkhart reportedly told Beeman to leave, at which point Beeman fired his gun at Burkhart. Deputies say Burkhart returned fire, hitting Beeman twice. Burkhart then called 911 to request medical assistance. Neither Bukrhart nor the woman were hurt.

Burkhart currently faces one charge of unlawful possession of a gun. He is in jail on no bond for a probation violation warrant.
