Criminal setting set for Columbia active shooter suspect

UPDATE 11/6: Jolley is scheduled for a criminal setting Monday.

Columbia Police have identified the suspect in Saturday night’s active shooter incident on Ballenger Lane as Gary Jolley, 64, of Columbia.

Police were called to the scene just after 8 p.m. Saturday for reports of a disturbance with a gun. While officers were on their way to the scene they were alerted that shots were fired.

Police said Jolley forced his way into a home in the 1400 block of Ballenger lane armed with a rifle. There were eight adults and six children inside the home at the time.

Jolley allegedly made threats to kill a 58-year-old woman inside the home, which he had previously been in a relationship with. Police said the woman, who was also holding a 6 month old girl, and a 16-year-old girl ran into a room to hide from Jolley.

The 16-year-old held the door shut as Jolley tried to get in. Police said he fired one round through the door to gain entry. The girl’s hand was injured, but it’s unclear if the injury was due to the bullet or debris from the door.

A struggle continued between Jolley and the girl and more gunshots were fired. The 16-year-old was able to get the gun away from and helped restrain him along with other adults. While being restrained Jolley hit a 27-year-old woman multiple times.

Police searched the home and found bullet holes, a rifle, handguns, and ammunition inside and outside of the home. Officers also found bullets on Jolley.

Jolley is facing charges of first degree burglary, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, six counts of endangering the welfare of a child, first and second degree domestic assault, two counts of first degree assault, and property damage.

He’s currently being held in the Boone County Jail on a $1,000,000 bond.
