Central Columbia resident asking city for more lighting in neighborhood

One resident in central Columbia is asking the city for more lighting in what she calls a targeting area for improvement.

Benton Street in central Columbia, currently has two lights located at the end of each side of the street, leaving a lot of dark spaces.

ABC 17 News spoke with the resident who is set to address the Columbia city council Monday night. Heather Morgan says this is her first time addressing the issue to the city. Her main concern is for her neighborhoods safety. Morgan says, “people park there cars in front of my house, and across the street because it’s dark.”

Morgan says she knows the city is trying to address targeted areas in Columbia to help reduce crime, and she believes that adding additional lighting could help.

ABC 17 News has done several stories on lighting problems on the east campus neighborhood. Multiple students and residents voiced their concerns for the lack of lighting. After several studies done the City of Columbia says the lighting on the east campus is fine.
