Mizzou hires Sterk as athletic director

UPDATE: San Diego State announces Sterk will leave his position as athletic director. He he will begin serving as Mizzou athletic director on September 1. The University of Missouri said it had no comment regarding a new athletic director.

The UM System Board of Curators is expected to meet in executive session Tuesday evening. The meeting will be held “for consideration of certain confidential or privileged communications with university counsel, negotiated contracts and personnel matters,” according to a public notice.

COLUMBIA, Mo.– Mizzou will hire Jim Sterk to be the new athletic director, a source confirmed to ABC 17 News on Monday.

Sterk, who is from Washington state, has been the athletic director at San Diego State University since 2010. Mizzou has been without a permanent AD since Mack Rhoades left in July. Rhoades will take over as AD at Baylor University later this month.

Earlier this year, Sterk was named 2015-16 Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

According to his bio on the San Diego State athletics website, Sterk got a bachelor’s degree in physical and business education from Western Washington University, and a master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University. Sterk is married with three children.

Sterk’s contract is subject to approval by the UM Board of Curators. A University spokesperson said the school had no comment on the hiring. There is no introductory press conference scheduled at this time.
