Lt. governor loses bid for state’s highest office

Lt. governor Peter Kinder lost a failed bid on Tuesday to become the Republican nominee for Missouri governor. Kinder came in third with just over 20 percent of the vote.

He was running in a hotly contested Republican primary race against former Missouri House speaker and U.S. Attorney, Catherine Hanaway, former Navy SEAL Eric Greitens, and suburban St. Louis businessman John Brunner. Greitens won the nomination with more than 35 percent of all total votes cast, and Brunner came in second with nearly 25 percent.

Kinder has served in elected office for more than two decades. He was elected to the state senate in 1992 and served 12 years before nabbing the lieutenant governor seat in 2004.

Kinder claimed his experience serving in the legislature would have made him an effective governor.

ABC 17 News had a crew at Kinder’s election night party in his hometown of Cape Girardeau.
