Proposed upcoming Jefferson City budget introduced to city council

Jefferson City leaders are getting closer to finalizing the city’s budget for the upcoming year.

A proposed total budget of more than $60.8 million was introduced at the Monday night city council meeting.

The 2017 Fiscal Year starts November 1 and goes through the end of October 2017.

The expected revenues for the next year are about $32.2 million.

That is more than $1 million less than the current year’s general revenue budget.

About 29.5 percent of the proposed general revenue budget would go toward the police department, 22 percent would go toward the fire department and 19 percent toward public works among other things.

The proposed total budget includes additional funding sources outside the general revenue budget such as the half-cent sales tax voters will decide whether to extend Tuesday.

Officials started looking at the upcoming budget at the city level last fall, according to Mayor Carrie Tergin.

Mayor Tergin made one major change to the proposed budget before recommending it to city council.

“The big change that I added was adding some money for MSP for the historic prison,” Tergin said. “There are some renovations that we’d like to see there in holding more events and as we increase our tourism there. We did this last year in the budget. We added $15,000 and this year I’ve proposed $20,000.”

The budget committee is still meeting to finalize details and look at the budget more in depth before bringing it back to city council.

Tergin said she expected a vote on approving the budget by mid-September.
