A deeper look at crime in Columbia

With two shootings in one week, ABC 17 News wanted to take a deeper look into shootings in Columbia.

The most recent shooting happened Friday night on Worley Street and Pennant Street. A 22-year-old man was shot. As of Sunday, Columbia Police had not released any suspect information.

We reviewed police dispatch records for Worley Street and searched for “shots heard” calls to 911.

Since the January 1, 2016, there have been at least five calls to Worley Street with reports of gun shots. That doesn’t necessarily mean there were gun shots fired at each of these incidents, just that people called reporting to hear them.

The calls reported on Worley were between Stadium and Providence. One call came in April; two in June; and two in July.

There have been incidents of fights at the mall, just on the other side of Stadium.

On the east side of Providence is Douglass Park. Last week there was an altercation there that is believed to be connected to the homicide that happened Wednesday. Marquez Reed, 17, was shot and killed near Allen Street and Lasalle Place, just south of Worley Street.
