Radar detects thousands of birds Wednesday morning
Right before sunrise at 6AM the Doppler radar picked up on somewhat of a donut looking ring. This is called a Roost Ring. The radar beam in Kansas City picked up on thousands of birds leaving their roost this morning! Due to the curvature of earth, and the tilt of the radar beam, the radar detects at higher altitudes. In a matter of minutes the ring that you see, vanished as the birds flew from their nest.
While the type of bird can’t be detected by the radar beam, some birds gather in late Summer and early Fall such as the Purple Martin. We’ll likely see more “Roost Rings” in the coming weeks heading into Fall. For additional weather updates follow @ABC17Stormtrack on Twitter.
