Suspect in 8 hour standoff with Columbia Police charged

A 53-year-old Columbia woman has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon after an 8-hour standoff with Columbia police last week.

Monica Whited was charged in Boone County court Tuesday.

According to the probable cause statement, Whited was screaming obscenities to residents in the 1600 block of Woodmoor Ct. on July 15 and threatening them with a gun. She allegedly screamed, “I’ll blow all your heads off with my shotgun.”

Police responded to the scene around 6:20 p.m. Whited and another 80-year-old woman refused to come out of the house.

A witness showed police cell phone video of Whited in her back yard holding the shotgun.

Multiple CPD officers would remain on scene for 8 hours trying to get Whited and the other woman to come out of the house peacefully. The department’s crisis negotiation team was also on scene trying to make contact with the suspect, but were unsuccessful.

The SWAT team was called in around 11:30 p.m. Officers later positioned the BearCat vehicle right in front of the home and used a PA system to try to make contact with Whited.

The department called off the standoff around 2 a.m. after being unable to reach a peaceful resolution with the suspect.

Officers continued to patrol the area through the overnight hours. Whited was taken into custody around 7:30 Saturday morning without incident.

She and her 80-year-old mother were taken to a secure facility. According to court documents, Whited is known to Columbia Police to be mentally unstable and suffers from paranoia.
