How to spot storm cleanup scams
Some Mid-Missourians are still cleaning up after storms swept though this week. Situations like this can be appealing to scammers.
ABC 17 News spoke with experts about what you should look out for in order to avoid becoming a victim.
Sean Spence with the Mid-Missouri Better Business Bureau said, “If somebody comes to your house unsolicited for work, that’s often a really big flag because you want to make sure that you’re going to have a way to really check them out. Another thing to watch out for is just someone who doesn’t have references.”
The Mid-Missouri Better Business Bureau also said it sees this kind of scam often and recommends that consumers pay no more than 1/3 of the cost up front.
