Terror alert travel risks
At least 36 people were killed and another 147 wounded in the terror attack in at the Istanbul Ataturk Airport in Turkey on Tuesday night.
Although Istanbul is about 5,800 miles away from Mid-Missouri, we’re reminded regularly that these deadly attacks can happen anywhere.
Terrorism expert and the former coordinator for Homeland Security for Missouri Paul Fennewald says people here at home should really pay attention while gathering in large groups for upcoming July 4th fireworks celebrations. He says it’s important to know what to do if you see something that doesn’t seem right. Fennewald says, “If you see something suspicious, do you know what to report or who to report it to? Because the next terror attack in our country isn’t going to be prevented by the FBI. It isn’t going to be prevented by the CIA. It isn’t even going to be prevented by your local law enforcement. It’s going to be prevented by alert citizens seeing something out of the ordinary and then telling somebody about it.”
Mr. Fennewald also says he doesn’t think Americans are at any higher risk during the upcoming holiday weekend, but he just advises everyone stay alert to all possibilities.
