Man pleads guilty to charges stemming from fight that injured officer

A man pleaded guilty Monday to charges stemming from a fight in downtown Columbia that left an officer injured.

It happened back in July of 2015 in front of a bar on Broadway in downtown Columbia.

Prosecutors tell us Andrew Mackey pleaded guilty to five charges Monday.

Those charges included felonyassault on a law enforcement officer, 2 counts of misdemeanor resisting arrest, assault, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Andrew Mackey allegedly kicked a police officer in the head last July as the officer was trying to arrest Andrew’s brother Matthew. The officer was apparently rushed to the hospital with a concussion and multiple cuts to his head.

Police also told ABC 17 News they had to use a taser on one of the men.

The prosecutor in the case tells us he’s recommending a five year sentence for the felony charge and 90 days in jail on each misdemeanor count.

He says Mackey pled “open,” which is his right. He says that means Mackey can ask the judge for probation. The prosecutor says he isopposed to probation. He says Mackey has a prior conviction for a bar assault in California.

No word yet on when Mackey will be sentenced.
