Public outcry leads Cole Co. leaders to reverse decision to not lower flags for Orlando victims
Cole County presiding commissioner Sam Bushman tells ABC 17 News public outcry led commissioner Kris Scheperle to change his vote to not lower flags on county buildings. Bushman says the flags at all county buildings are now lowered.
After Sunday’sdeadly terrorist attack in Orlando, President Obama proclaimed flags outside public buildings should be flown at half-staff. Cole County leaders decided not to lower the flags at their county buildings Monday, before swiftly changing course on Tuesday because of public outcry.
Before reversing the decision, at the time Western District commissioner Kris Scheperle said, “We mourn the loss of those in Florida, but at the same time, we want to respect all those that our flag ordinance outlines we should fly half-staff for.”
The commission voted Monday, 2-1 against changing the flag displays, presiding commissioner Sam Bushman being the vote in favor.
Some leaders in Jefferson City disagreed with the decision.
“I’m somewhat disappointed they didn’t lower the flags,” said 3rd Ward councilman Ken Hussey. “There’s a presidential proclamation asking government entities to do so. I think it’s a sign of respect for what happened in Orlando and to other communities around the country that are grieving as well.”
