Vigil happening in Columbia for Orlando terror victims

Hundreds of community members gathered together Monday night in support and solidarity of those who have been affected and impacted by the massacre in Orlando.

A vigil is scheduled in Columbia to honor those who lost their lives in the mass shooting in Orlando Sunday morning.

Event organizer James Roark-Gruender told ABC 17 news that, “even though we are thousands of miles away, we will needed an outlet for the community to come together. This tragedy happened a thousand of miles away, but there isn’t a LGBT person who hasn’t been affected by this.”

The news released said, “This act was a direct attack against the LGBTQ community. We offer our deepest condolences and thoughts to the friends and families of those who were injured or lost as a result of this senseless act of violence.”

The vigil is set to begin around 8 p.m. Monday at the amphitheater? outside the Boone County courthouse. According to the event leader, they will have speakers, followed by reading of the victims names, and a candlelight vigil.

The Center Project, Mid-Mo Pride Fest, Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia, Rock Bridge Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), MU Counseling Center, MU LGBTQ Resource Center, MU Triangle Coalition, MU Fluidity, MU Queer Trans People of Color, and MU Missouri Students Association worked together to plan the event.
