Rep. Hartzler discusses terror attack

In the wake of the deadly terror attack in Orlando, Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler says Mid-Missourians should be “alert” but not scared about traveling around the nation.

Hartzler tells ABC 17 News she feels confident that traveling within the country is safe but says, “we do need to be aware that this radicalization is taking place among individuals here even in our country and need to be vigilant to make sure it doesn’t impact our communities or harm our families.”

The Department of Homeland Security is warning the Internet is a dangerous “new phase” in the threat of terrorism. Terrorism experts agree would-be terrorists are increasingly becoming “self-radicalized” through the internet.

Rep. Hartzler says there is no need for Americans to alter their travel plans, but the old safety slogan of “see something-say something” should be considered regularly. She says it’s a reality that “radical Islamic terrorism has reached our shores and will continue to be a threat until (the U.S. goes) after and defeats the core of the radical ideology which is ISIS.”

Hartzler says she has a classified briefing tomorrow on Capitol Hill with Homeland Security, the State Department and other officials. One of the topics in that meeting will likely include ways to keep so-called lone wolves from self-radicalizing on the internet.
