Jefferson City considers raising tobacco age

The Jefferson City Council for Drug-Free Youth brought a proposal to the city council to raise the minimum legal age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21.

The city’s administration committee referred the item to the public safety committee Wednesday.

Joy Sweeney, the director of the Council for Drug-Free Youth, said the measure would be of great benefit to young people in the city, protecting them from a dangerous and addictive substance.

The public safety committee is expected to consider the measure in mid-June.
