JCPS sees record summer school attendance

Jefferson City Public Schools saw a 40 percent rise in summer school attendance in 2016.

School administrators said the increase is tied to the district offering open enrollment.

Now, any student in the JCPS area can enroll and take part in summer programs instead of just those who are enrolled during the year.

Officials said it’s a good alternative for families who would otherwise need daycare services.

“It gives kids an extension of a classroom for those that may need that extra help and assistance,” said Amy Berendzen, with Jefferson City Public Schools.”It also provides an alternative for families, as some families within our community find it difficult to cover that summer schedule without kids in buildings and that daily supervision.”

District leaders said it was easier to accommodate more students this year as there are no major renovations projects at any other the school buildings.
