Suspect in MU shooting charged with unlawful weapon use
The suspect in a shooting at Mizzou in early May has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon.
Tyree Reed, 22, was arrested around 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon by the University of Missouri Police Department.
Major Brian Weimer with University of Missouri Police Department says Reed told investigators he is not an MU student. A person with the same name is listed on the university’s website as a junior in general studies.
University spokesperson Christian Basi confirmed Reed was enrolled as a student during the Spring 2016 semester, but is currently not enrolled in summer classes. He said the system won’t update with returning students for the fall semester until August.
On May 6, campus police investigated a shooting near Traditions Plaza at the north end of Carnahan Quad, after shots were fired into the air. It happened during a fraternity probate event.
According to the probable cause statement, MUPD received an anonymous tip that Reed matched the description of the shooter and was also known to drive a white four door car that was described by witnesses.
Court documents state Reed claimed he drove up to the event looking for his brother and heard someone else fire the gunshots. He told police he left the area after the shots were fired.
Police issued a warrant to search Reed’s iPhone. According to the PC statement, Reed exchanged text messages about two hours after the shooting happened. Someone texted Reed telling him to stay away from the quad area because police were everywhere.
The person continued and said, “They got a description of you and half of your license plate.” Reed replies, “Not the right plate first off and the only thing that’s right is the dreads.” He then texted, “Clothes burnt already.”
Reed was arrested on suspicion of armed criminal action as well as unlawful use of a weapon. So far, he has only been charged with unlawful use of a weapon, a Class D felony.
He had his first court appearance by video arraignment Friday afternoon. Judge Michael Bradley ordered a bond investigation and set his next hearing for June 14 at 9 a.m.
Reed is being held in the Boone County Jail without a set bond.
Major Weimer said the investigation is ongoing.
