GOP AG candidates debate issues
The Republican candidates for Missouri attorney general made their cases for the job Monday, in what may be their last debate before primary election day.
State Senator Kurt Schaefer of Columbia, and University of Missouri law professor Josh Hawley, also of Columbia, discussed the issues on the Gary Nolan Show on 93.9 The Eagle. Click here to listen to the debate.
Talking about issues ranging from immigration to abortion, the candidates boasted their experience and why each is ready to be the state’s top law enforcement official.
On being the attorney general of the state, Schaefer said, “You are the last line of defense. Whether it’s consumer protection, whether it’s murder, whether it’s corporate fraud, you have to be the one who can command that team. I’ve been doing it for 20 years. I know how to do it.”
Hawley asked what the last three attorneys general have in common, answering, “It’s not that they were prosecutors. It’s that every single one of them was a Constitutional lawyer who had to represent this state in the Supreme Court of the United States. I know how to do it. I’ll do it again, and it’s time we had a fighter for our liberties in federal courts, state courts and the U.S. Supreme Court.”
The candidate that wins the nomination on August 2nd will face the Democratic candidate in November’s election. Former Cass County prosecutor Teresa Hensley and St. Louis County assessor and former State Representative Jake Zimmerman are seeking the Democratic nomination.
According to the Missouri Ethics Commission reports, Hawley has raised a little more than $1,336,905 for his campaign. Schaefer has raised $2,577,439.
