One person charged, one on the run after reportedly shooting dog near Holts Summit

One man is charged and another is on the loose after the two reportedly shot a dog in Callaway County.

Callaway County prosecutors charged Rafael Hickmon, 27, for felony unlawful possession of a firearm and animal abuse Sunday.

Around 4:00 p.m. Friday, deputies responded to the Evergreen apartment complex off State Road AA near Holts Summit for a report of shots fired.

Witnesses on scene told deputies two men unjustly shot and killed a dog on the property, according to the Callaway County Sheriff’s Office. The dog was reportedly on a leash and being controlled by its owners.

The sheriff’s office said several small children were nearby when the shooting happened.

Deputies found Hickmon on scene and arrested him. He is currently in the Callaway County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

A second suspect, Jernail Hickmon, 24, ran away and has not been found, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities believe Jernail Hickmon is in the Holts Summit or Jefferson City area. If you have any information about his location, authorities ask you to contact the sheriff’s office or call Crimestoppers at (573)592-2474 to remain anonymous.
