Columbia council approves new flag design

The Columbia City Council has approved a design for a new official city flag. The design was created by Jon Sheltmire. City leaders say it represents Columbia being at a crossroads in the center of the state, and incorporates the existing city logo to represent Columbia’s diverse community.

The design is blue and green, symbolizing Columbia’s rivers, creeks, and lakes, as well as woodlands, trails, parks, and “heritage of nature conservation.”

Sheltmire’s design was one of 84 submitted in a contest which ended in November 2014. In September 2015, three finalists were chosen, and following public feedback, Sheltmire’s design was deemed the winner.

A flag ceremony will be planned for a future date, yet to be determined.
