Boys and Girls Club of Jefferson City plans to build new facility near Lincoln University
The Boys and Girls Club of Jefferson City has plans to build a new facility.
Monday, a bill was introduced to the Jefferson City Council to allow the non-profit organization to build near the intersection of Lafayette and Franklin Streets.
The Boys and Girls Club’s former building on East Elm Street was acquired by MoDOT as part of the Lafayette Street Interchange Project. The building has already been demolished.
The organization’s executive director Stephanie Johnson told ABC 17 News Lincoln University donated land at 1105 Lafayette Street to the Boys and Girls Club of Jefferson City.
The property is located right next to the future Parks and Recreation/Lincoln University Wellness and Recreation Center. The Wellness Center is currently under construction.
Plans for the proposed Boys and Girls Club facility show it would be a 18,400 square foot two-story building, according to the bill summary.
The facility would share a parking lot with the Wellness and Recreation Center. It would also have playground areas on the side and back of the building.
However, the property falls in a single-family residential zone. The bill introduced to the city council Monday would allow a special exception permit for the building.
The Jefferson City Planning and Zoning Commission reviewed the request in April and approved it unanimously.
The city council will hold a public hearing for the bill at its next meeting on May 16.
