Approaching Week of Active Weather Will Bring Possibility of Severe Storms

After a quiet weekend, an active, spring-like weather pattern will fire up heading into the work week. On Monday, chances for showers and thunderstorms will be possible in the late afternoon and evening hours, but none are expected to be severe.

An upper level trough expected to sweep through Tuesday will bring our first shot at stronger thunderstorms Tuesday evening into early Wednesday morning. All ingredients for severe weather will be in place, including strong winds, instability, lift, and moisture. This will make thunderstorms likely. In fact, the Storm Prediction Center has placed areas to the west of HWY 63 under the “slight” risk category. All modes of severe weather will be possible, with the greatest threats being large hail and damaging winds.

Yet another round of strong to severe storms will be possible Wednesday afternoon as the cold front associated with this system edges forward and interacts with the persistent warm, moist flow that will characterize the flow pattern from Monday through Tuesday. The intensity of storms during this round, however, will depend largely on the timing of the shower activity Wednesday morning. If showers clear out fast enough, allowing more time for the atmosphere to “recharge”, so to speak, storms are expected to be on the stronger to severe side.
