Hazmat crew working to contain leak in Kingdom City

UPDATE: The Callaway County Sheriff’s office tells ABC 17 News the hazardous material has all been cleared.

Multiple agencies were on the scene for hours Monday night, cleaning up a material leaking from a semi truck.

State Troopers tell ABC 17 News a person was following behind the truck when they noticed the vehicle was leaking. The driver was alerted and called authorities.

The Callaway County Sheriff’s Department, Callaway County Fire Department and Columbia’s Hazmat team were all on the scene, working to clean up the nonflammable corrosive material called sodium hydrochloride.

The Callaway County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the semi was hauling containers of the material and sustained a leak in one of the chemical containers. According to State Troopers, the material was apparently eating away at the aluminum of the truck.

The Callaway County Sheriff’s Department said the situation was under control and safety precautions were being taken.

ABC 17 News spoke with some truck drivers who were stuck because of the cleanup. They’re concerned the delay to get to their trucks could affect their morning routes.

Clean up crews were able to clean up the bleach like substance by solidifying the liquid.

As of right now, no fines have been given to the trucking company.

ORIGINAL STORY, 9:04 p.m.: A hazmat team is at a Kingdom City gas station for a leak.

A State Trooper tells ABC 17 News a corrosive material is leaking from a truck at Petromart.

Firefighters and the Missouri State Highway Patrol are on scene working to contain the material.
