Multiple residents displaced after apartment fire near Columbia College

Multiple residents were displaced Tuesday after an apartment fire in central Columbia.

At least eight units responded to the structure fire near Columbia College at the corner of Wilkes and Eighth Street.

Firefighters said the fire broke out just after 2:30 Tuesday morning.

Fire crews said multiple callers reported seeing flames showing from a 6-plex apartment in the 900 block of Wilkes.

Columbia firefighters said they found heavy fire coming from the first and second floors of the apartment. Crews conducted an aggressive attack and the fire was knocked down within 15 minutes of arrival.

ABC 17 News spoke to the resident of the apartment that caught fire, and he tells us he lost everything. He believes the fire was caused by either a malfunction in his furnace or an issue with the water heater.

No one was injured in the fire, but at least one occupant is getting housing assistance from the Red Cross.

Fire crews are working to determine the official cause of the fire and a dollar damage estimate. The fire was still under investigation Tuesday morning.
