Jefferson City home damaged in fire caused by heating device

The Jefferson City Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire in the 1300 block of Gordon Court at 1:50 a.m. Saturday.

When firefighters got on scene, they reported a fire in the garage with smoke throughout the home. Fire crews immediately went into the home and performed an aggressive fire attack and put out the fire in the garage and attic space.

The fire was under control within 15 minutes and firefighters remained on the scene for 2 hours to complete operations. The home sustained fire damage to the garage and attic and there was smoke damage throughout the home.

The residents reported smelling smoke in the house and then hearing the smoke alarm sounding. One resident saw the wall in the garage on fire and both occupants went outside before to the fire department arrived. No one was hurt during the fire.

According to the fire department, the fire was caused by a malfunction of a homemade wood burning heating device.

The fire damaged the electrical connection to the house and the residents were not able to stay in the home. The American Red Cross was contacted andassisted the family with temporary housing.
