Crews repair sinkhole in Jefferson City

Repair work is underway on a sinkhole that opened up in Jefferson City this week. According to Britt Smith with the public works department, the hole was caused by an abandoned pipe connected to a sewer manhole. The pipe is cracked and had been taking in gravel and dirt.

Smith says part of the problem is aging infrastructure around the city, though he adds there are measures in place to keep track of old or abandoned pipes so crews can get to problem areas before they get worse.

Smith credits the public for letting his department know about the sinkhole before it got out of hand.
