Report: Former Gasconade County deputy accused of sex crimes found dead in jail cell
STE. GENEVIEVE COUNTY, Mo. – A former Gasconade County Sheriff accused of sex crimes while on duty has been found dead in his jail cell, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch.
Rainey’s attorney, Christian Goeke, told the St. Louis Post Dispatch he was notified by the U.S. Marshal of Rainey’s death early Saturday morning.
According to the report, St. Genevieve County Sheriff Major, Jason Schott, said the Missouri State Highway Patrol was investigating an “in-custody death” which was standard procedure. He did say it appeared to be a suicide, but did not provide formal confirmation.
He also said he would not answer any specifics concerning Rainey.
Rainey was indicted March 2nd in federal court in St. Louis on a charge of enticement of a minor to engage in commercial sex act, and four counts of deprivation of rights under color of law.
Court documents show that Rainey tried to force at least six women to have sex with him. One of them was a minor at the time.
ABC 17 News is waiting to hear back from the St. Genevieve County Sheriff’s office for formal confirmation.
