City council approves sidewalk closures ahead of demolition

The Columbia city council approved sidewalk closures Monday night along Locust, 9th and 10th streets.

The closures were approved from April 1 to August 20, 2017

This is where several buildings including Quinton’s Bar and Deli and Britches Clothing are set to be demolished.

This comes after the Columbia City Council voted to approve the demolition last month. A developer from California wants to build a 10-story retail/residential building on the lot. The apartment building plans still need to be approved. The city has to see if the building will fit zoning requirements and if the city’s utilities can handle extra strain.

No specific day was given at the council meeting, but engineers say the approximate construction start for Rise Apartments is June 2016.

According to a “goodbye” letter on Quinton’s website, they opened in 1995. They say the new building is an “opportunity for the city to take another step forward.”
