Car snaps utility pole in half

A car crashed into a utility pole in central Columbia, breaking the pole in half. The crash happened in front of the ABC 17 studio shortly after 10 a.m.

Police arrived at the scene quickly; it’s unclear at this point if there are injuries, or what caused the car to crash. Emergency crews have closed both westbound lanes of Business Loop 70 while they clean up the scene.

The closure could last several hours as crews will need to replace the entire pole and reconnect electricity and phone lines. Authorities are detouring traffic north onto 7th Street and onto Nebraska Avenue.

If you are driving in the area, please use caution as there may be emergency vehicles stopped along the road.
