Assistant Fire Marshal investigating fire at Stephens College

Just after 1 o’clock Saturday afternoon, the Columbia Fire Department was called to Wood Hall on Stephens College campus for a fire alarm.

Firefighters said heavy smoke was coming from the fifth floor of the residence hall on South College Avenue. The sprinkler system was able to contain the fire to one room and fully put out the flames.

The Assistant Fire Marshal is investigating the cause and origin of the fire. As of 3 p.m. Saturday a cause had not been determined.

The fire department said the sprinkler system caused water damage to nearby dorm rooms, but a damage estimate has not been determined yet.

No one was hurt during the fire.
