Next phase of I-70 bridge project impacting Business Loop 70 traffic

MODOT discussed upcoming traffic changes on Business Loop 70 with Columbia residents Monday evening.

“As soon as the weather breaks here in the spring in the next couple weeks, you’re going to see a lot of activity and work in that Business Loop/West Boulevard area,” said Travis Koestner, MODOT Assistant District Engineer.

The next phase of the I-70 bridge replacement project is scheduled to start in the next couple weeks as crews build the new bridge over Business Loop 70.

Several traffic routes will be impacted during the construction.

Starting in March crews still start building new two-lane roundabouts on the north and south side of I-70, which will cause some lane closures.

As crews continue building the new bridge over Business Loop 70, one street and a couple interstate access ramps will be closed for extended periods of time.

Mid-April-May: Creasy Springs Rd. closed 15 days Mid-June-July: South Outer Rd. closed 30 days. West Blvd. and Business LoopI-70 ramps closed 45 days.

During the 45-day closure, drivers will have to use the Stadium or Providence exits.

Koestner said MODOT will most likely not have a detour route, but still advises drivers to find another way around the construction.

“That really helps the safety of the construction, drive time and safety of the commuters as they move through the area,” he said.

The bridge over Business Loop 70 is expected to be finished by early September. Koestner said the entire bridge replacement project is on schedule and should be done by early October.
