Power outage affects southern Columbia
UPDATE, Saturday, 11:00 a.m.: According to CPL, the cause of the outage was from a bad underground line near the MKT trail. Crews found the bad line Friday night and repaired it. They couldn’t say exactly what caused the underground line to go bad; they said it could be age or shifting soil.
UPDATE, 5:00 a.m.: Power has been fully restored.
UPDATE, 11:05 p.m.: Power has been restored to more than one thousand residents.
ORIGINAL STORY, 9:47 p.m.: A power outage occurred in southern and southwest Columbia around 8:45 p.m. Friday night.
More than 1,500 people were without power with the outage gradually expanded in the area from 8:45 – 10:00 p.m.
ABC 17 News crews reported stoplights out at Nifong Boulevard and Forum Boulevard.
Columbia Joint Communications tweeted the outage affected Water & Light customers using the Hinkson substation, which is located at Providence Road and Old Route K.Water & Light had previously reported that Hinkson was “over capacity” in its January southern transmission line presentation.
The Columbia Water & Lightoutage pageshowed five locations with crews assigned to four of the locations as of 10:50 p.m. Friday night.
ABC 17 News spoke with a Water & Light crew member at 10:40 p.m. who said they were still trying to find out a cause to the outage.
