Police identify victim in fatal Columbia crash

A two vehicle crash closed all of the northbound lanes of Hwy 63 at the Vandiver exit Saturday afternoon.

Officials say the driver of a 2013 Ford Fusion, 46-year-old John Guffey, was heading southbound on Highway 63 when his car veered left over the median and crashed into a semi truck going northbound.

Guffey died on scene. The driver of the semi, Homer Couch, refused treatment. Both men were wearing their seat belt.

The call came in at noon. Columbia Fire was nearby the accident for Polar Plunge. They said they responded within five minutes.

As of 2 p.m. all lanes of Hwy 63 were still blocked but the car was being towed from the scene. Columbia Fire says the Columbia Police Department is taking over the crash investigation.

Police are still investigating whether alcohol or drug use played a role in the crash.
