Suspicious device deemed ‘safe’ on Westminster College campus

Police told ABC 17 News they evacuated part of Westminster College after someone found a suspicious package on campus. Officers responded just before 2:00 Monday afternoon.

The MSHP bomb squad arrived to the scene shortly before 3:30 p.m.

At 4:15, ABC 17 News confirmed the suspicious package was deemed safe, and authorities determined it was an empty metal canister found under a vehicle.

Officials evacuated certain buildings as a precaution while they investigated the suspicious package. The college confirmed that section included the freshman residence halls on the quad, the Mueller Leadership Hall and Champ Auditorium. Everyone was sent to the Hunter Activity Center after a suspicious package was reported by a student in a parking lot outside the dining facilities at the Mueller Leadership Hall.

Fulton police confirmed with ABC 17 News the Highway Patrol was called in to help officers and campus security with the investigation. The area was also sealed off to all traffic at Seventh Street.
