Man with apparent ties to Columbia gang arrested after alleged fight with gun

A man who has previously claimed ties to a Columbia gang is back in jail this morning.

Columbia Police arrested Tavion Jones Wednesday night. He’s facing possible charges of kidnapping, armed criminal action and robbery.

Law enforcement said they arrested Jones in connection to a fight involving a gun that happened on Tuesday afternoon just south of Columbia off Highway 63.

The Boone County Sheriff’s office tells ABC 17 News they had reports of a disturbance and a car crash in a ditch near a mobile home park. Police confirmed there were two suspects, but only one was taken into custody.

There were also two victims, including one person who went to the hospital in an ambulance. Officers did not have any further details about the extent of their injuries. They believe the victims were hurt after jumping out the car once the fighting broke out.

On Thursday police said they arrested Jones while investigating an incident at the Royal Inn in the 1800 block of I-70 Drive Southwest. During investigation of the incident, officers said they encountered Jones, who they believed was possibly involved in the incident on Old Millers Road East.

Officers said they detained Jones in a patrol car pending questioning. While in the patrol car, officers said they found Jones with marijuana.

Police said an investigation of both incidents leaddetectives to develop probable cause to arrest of Jones in relation to the fight with a gun on Old Millers Road East.

Jones has previously been arrested in connection with several shooting incidents. He is accused of being the shooter in a 2014 drive-by shooting in Jefferson City as well as a July 4th shooting that same year in Columbia.

He’s currently in the Boone County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
