School safety after BB guns reported on middle school campuses

A West Middle School student brought a BB gun to school yesterday, and that comes just a few days after a different student brought a BB gun to Lange Middle School.

I’m sure your wondering — how is your school keeping your child safe?

Michelle Baumstark with Columbia Public Schools says, “The most important thing here is that we are partners, with our parents and family in the community. It is just as important that we provide a safe environment at school as it is important that parents help us ensure that only those items that belong in school, come to school with their students.”

Is this starting to be a trend? Looking further at the statistics in school districts – starting with Columbia. In 2006, fifteen students out of a hundred brought weapons to school, and in 2008 it took a huge spike resulting in 18 students. Taking a significant drop in 2013.

In Jefferson City, a significant drop in numbers for 2007 with the amount of students bringing weapons to school.

With both city numbers dropping in the last couple of years, students have started to realize the consequences. ” [Students] are becoming more aware and cognizantof the disciplinary actions and consequences that can result in bringing a prohibited item to campus.”

Parents, this is where you can come in. Checking your child’s backpack is one of the best things that you can do to hopefully prevent any future incidences. Especially after a weekend full of outdoor activities, students can sometimes be forgetful, which can result in disciplinary action.
