Man accused in Callaway Co. car thefts linked to more near Mexico

A Montgomery City man is now being linked to more car thefts after being pegged as a suspect in Callaway Co. car thefts this week.

The Callaway County Sheriff’s Office said it worked with the Audrain County Sheriff’s Office and the Auxvasse Police Department to investigate several car thefts on February 3 , 2016.

On Monday, 21-year-old Harley Walls was arrested in St. Petersin one of the stolen Callaway County vehicles.

Mexico Dept. of Public Safety said Wednesday that Walls could be linked to vehicle thefts in the 900 block of E. Liberty and the 100 block of S. Olive on February 3.

Authorities found the first car along Highway 54 and State Route A. The second car was found later along Highway 54 and Highway 19.

Across the street, another car was stolen from the Community R-VI High School, according to the Audrain County Sheriff’s Office. That car was later found on Callaway County Road 280.

“The cars that were stolen from Audrain County were found near where cars came up missing in Callaway County,” Cheif Deputy Matt Oller with the Audrain County Sheriff’s Office said. “So there’s a daisy chain of stolen cars that are left and then another car comes up missing.”

All of the cars stolen in Audrain County were unlocked with keys left on the inside, Oller said.

Walls faces two counts of stealing a motor vehicle and one count of tampering with a motor vehicle in Callaway Co. Walls is currently being held on $25,000 bond in the Callaway County Jail.
