Two Mizzou basketball players arrested for drug paraphernalia

Police arrested two University of Missouri basketball players for having drug paraphernalia.

The Mizzou men’s basketball team released this statement:

“Student-athletes Jakeenan Gant and Russell Woods were notified earlier today they have been suspended for tomorrow ‘s game at Alabama per athletic department policy. Their status with the program will be reevaluated next week.”

The department said 19-year-old Jakeenan Gant and 21-year-old Russell Woods were arrested Thursday for possessing two “marijuana smoking devices.” Gant, a sophomore from Springfield, Georgia, averages 15 minutes a game this year, with 4.5 points per game. Woods, a junior college transfer from John Logan College in Chicago, is averaging 15 minutes a game this season, as well.

Police found the paraphernalia while serving a search warrant the players’ house in the 3500 block of Rock Quarry Road on January 15. Police suspected Gant and Woods’ roommate, Koran Ward, for an armed robbery that happened a month before at The Den, an apartment complex less than a mile from the house. Public information officer Latisha Stroer said Ward was arrested during the search for first-degree robbery and unlawful use of a weapon. Gant and Woods were released on signature summons Thursday.

A fourth person living with them, Jarrett Thomas, was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia, and released on signature Tuesday.

Gant received a suspended imposition of sentence in November 2014 for a misdemeanor peace disturbance charge. The court placed him on two years of unsupervised probation.
