Lawmaker aims to completely ban alcohol in state capitol
A bill has been filed that would ban alcohol and tobacco completely from the state capitol building. Currently, the substances are legal only within the offices of elected officials.
Rep. Sheila Solon, the bill’s sponsor, says the ban would serve to both increase the health and wellness of legislators and help repair a damaged reputation.
“We need to change the culture of Jefferson City and right now, we have a culture of entitlement and that we’re special,” said Solon. “You name me a job where you can smoke and drink in your office or a public building where it’s allowed.”
Some disagree with the measure saying it’s a cultural tradition and not an ethical problem.
“It’s not like alcohol or tobacco is abused in here,” said Rep. Keith English. “It’s something that has gone on for many many years. It’s almost a common thing that happens here in the Capitol.”
Solon’s bill has not yet been assigned to a House committee.
