Intoxicated man leads authorities on 24 mile chase through Callaway Co.

Holts Summit Police arrested a 26-year-old man early Thursday morning after they said he led them on a more than 24 mile chase.

Holts Summit Police first saw Arlend Murphy swerving in and out of lanes on Highway 54 WB at Simon Blvd. shortly before 1 a.m.

When Murphy exited the highway and got back on and headed eastbound, an officer started following him with his emergency lights on.

The officer followed Murphy back onto the westbound side of the highway, where he sped up to 100 mph.

Court records said Murphy reached speeds of 140 mph and was driving in the middle of the road.

Murphy braked at Forsee Rd. where he turned off the highway and drove into a field.

The officer said Murphy started driving toward him and eventually onto Highway 63, where he eventually stopped near Highway Y.

Officers said they could smell alcohol on Murphy when he got out of the car, and saw open beer cans in the car.

When Murphy told officers he “just wanted to sleep,” his passenger said he may have mixed alcohol and anxiety medication.

Murphy was arrested for resisting arrest by fleeing, DWI, assault on a law enforcement officer, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, failure to maintain the right half of the roadway, careless driving, speeding more than 26 MPH over the posted limit, and failure to have lights on.
