Governor Nixon addresses state for last time

In his last state of the state address, Governor Jay Nixon is expected to discuss what he hopes to accomplish in this legislative session.

The state of the state address gets underway at 7:00 at the state capitol.

The Governor is also expected to reflect on his accomplishments over the last 7 years as the state’s chief executive.

Obviously the governor is term-limited and this may his last hurrah, but his political future is unknown.

Nixon has had a rough time in his own party, specifically when some fellow democrats bashed Governor Nixon for the way he handled the Ferguson unrest and aftermath.

The governor has had it tough on the other side of the aisle because the General Assembly is majority Republican, and practically veto-proof so it can be tough to get things he wants done without a tremendous amount of compromise.

“I’d like the Governor to talk about the big challenges that are facing the state, and I’d like him to talk about those in a way where he’s actually intent on working with us to get things done that are important to the people of the state,” said House Speaker Todd Richardson.

In addition to an outline of his legislative plans, we’ll also get a closer look at the Governor’s budget for Fiscal Year 2017.
