Trooper charged in drowning death appears in court

The Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper charged in the drowning death of a man who died in Highway Patrol custody appeared in court Tuesday.

ABC 17 News has been following the developments in the Brandon Ellingson case since he drowned in the Lake of the Ozarks in May 2014.

Just last month, a special prosecutor charged trooper Anthony Piercy with involuntary manslaughter for the incident.

Piercy is the trooper who arrested Ellingson for driving while intoxicated.

In court on Tuesday, Piercy waived his arraignment and preliminary hearing.

Piercy is now scheduled to appear in court on February 11 for a formal arraignment.
