Sunday snow causing slick roads

Snow dumping across Mid-MO early Sunday morning. The area saw anywhere between a dusting and an inch of snow. The snow was pretty dry but accumulated quick, causing difficulties driving.

The City of Columbia planned ahead, calling in a crew to begin road work at 5am. MoDOT’s central district also had crews in their region.

The city originally called in an eight-person crew this morning, but added an additional six after the slightly elevated snowfall that occurred early Sunday morning . The city says first and second priority routes should be in good shape for Sunday afternoon but snowy and slick patches still exist around town due to extreme cold and packed snow and ice.

MoDOT District Maintenance Engineer, Randy Aulbur, said the extreme cold temperatures are making it difficult to keep the roads completely clear. Aulbur said motorists should drive for the conditions and drive cautiously. They say drivers should slow down, steer and brake gently, and accelerate slowly at intersections.

Our ABC 17 morning crew say plows continued to clean up the streets around Columbia into mid-morning. The plows were also salting the roads around Columbia. Our crews saw one truck having trouble getting traction on the road; the back tires of the truck spinning as the driver attempted to drive through the intersection.
