Officials: Man wanted in December shooting caught selling heroin

A man wanted for firing a gun at two women east of Columbia two days after Christmas is now behind bars, accused of selling heroin.

Police got a recent tip Donte Cathey was selling heroin on Leeway Drive, near Brown Station and Blue Ridge roads in the northeast part of the city. They tried to stop him near a house where drugs are commonly sold, which is within 2,000 feet of Blue Ridge Elementary.

After a short chase, officers say they caught him and found over $1,000 in his pockets, plus several baggies of heroin.

Cathey was also on the loose after a shooting early Saturday morning, December 27. The Boone County sheriff’s office claims Cathey fired one round at the woman who asked him to leave the home on Santa Barbara Drive near east Broadway, plus another one who threatened to call the cops. Cathey is accused of holding his 6 year-old daughter at the time.

ABC 17 News found out Cathey was on parole for three felony convictions, including drugs, leaving the scene of an accident and driving while revoked. He has three convictions for third-degree domestic assault and has been in the Boone County jail 12 times since 2009 on various offenses.
