Wrong way driver arrested on Highway 54

A wrong way driver was arrested in Callaway County Thursday night on Highway 54 near Holts Summit.

Callaway County Joint Communications got a call saying a pick-up truck was driving west in the eastbound lanes on Hwy. 54 near State Road AE/TT near New Bloomfield.

A Holts Summit Police officer stopped the truck just north of Simon Blvd. When the officer approached the truck, 57-year-old Jess Smith of Mokane drove around the patrol car and continued to drive west in the eastbound lanes.

A Highway Patrol trooper stopped Smith near Summit Drive after he hit two other cars, causing minor damage. No one was injured.

Smith was arrested for driving while intoxicated, driving while revoked, resisting arrest by fleeing, careless and imprudent driving, and 2 counts of leaving the scene of an accident.
