Two Records Broken in Two Days

A storm system that continues to move to the northeast brought a weekend of record breaking weather to Mid-Missouri.

Due to the ample amounts of warm air advection associated with a surface low pressure system that grazed Missouri’s western border on Saturday, Friday night’s temperatures were abnormally warm. So warm, in fact, that they broke the record for a high minimum temperature at Columbia Regional Airport. At a low of 54 degrees, we surpassed the previous record of 46 degrees set in 1929.

Following the unusually warm air, the same storm system also brought, and continues to bring, heavy rainfall to Mid-Missouri, resulting in record breaking rainfall. Today we broke a 114 year record for daily maximum rainfall. The previous record was 0.97″ set in 1901. So far, the daily total rainfall at Columbia Regional Airport is sitting at 1.7″, with rain continuing to fall.
