Columbia man pleads guilty to involuntary manslaughter

A Columbia man pleaded guilty Monday afternoon in Boone County Circuit Court to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to four years in prison.

Stone Lavonne Midgyett, 20, was sentenced by Judge Jodie Asel. Midgyett pleaded guilty for his involvement in the Jan. 4 death of 17-year-old Deante Smith.

ABC 17 News covered the January shooting, which was reported near Silver Mill and White River drives.

Columbia police said in January that Midgyett reported a fight between associates of Midgyett and associates of Smith. Midgyett told police that as Smith ran, he turned and began shooting rounds from a firearm at Midgyett and his associates.

Police said in January that Midgyett admitted to pulling a handgun from his pants and firing about 14 rounds back at Smith.

Police said Smith suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

Columbia Police arrested Midgyett a day after the shooting.
